Ellis May

Ellis May, a rising solo artist hailing from Copenhagen, is the alias of singer, composer, producer and sound designer Sophia Maj.

Her songs are hyper-realism written in melodic bass-lines, somehow out of genres and woven together with layers of sampled piano, drum machines, dreamy choir-scapes, gloomy synthesizers and immense vocal depth.

Uncovering her own sound meant that May wanted to self-educate, as a songwriter, performer and a producer, as well as unlearn techniques she had previously relied on. She decided to study Sound Design at the National Filmschool of Denmark - and through that liberate her expression, while keeping the process pure and personal.

Debuting on Spot Festival 2017, May (vocal/piano), Hans Martin (guitar/choir) and Cecilie Meiniche (beats/keys/choir) has been performing throughout 2017, at tastemaker festivals such as Made In Space and venues like Vega and supporting Bing & Ruth (4AD).

Thoughtfully remixing the samples, and pushing a techno-vibe, they´re blending analogue elements of spacious bass-guitar, melodic piano with exquisite harmonizing of the 3 singers.

2018 was kicked off by Ellis May performing at Eurosonic Noorderslag to high praise by the music press and self-releasing her 4th single in February - while continuously working on new material for a debut EP planned for a fall 2018 release.

Recent press quotes:

Ellis May reminds me of two of my all-time favourite women’s voices: Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, and PJ Harvey, particularly circa Is This Desire? May has a background in sound design for flms, and also produces her eerie, pulsing music, which evokes creepy moors at dusk.”
