Nathan Ball

Nathan Ball is a Buckinghamshire born, Cornwall-based singer who writes dark, resounding alt-folk inspired by the crashing waves and epic seascapes with which he surrounds himself. Currently tucked away writing his next EP, to be released in Spring 2016, this summer the Gibson endorsed musician and his band have been touring the festival circuit, including shows at Barn On The Farm, Boardmasters and opening the main stage for Laura Marling at Somersault festival.

Nathan Ball's music comes from deep, down inside – a self-reflection that translates to an outwardly epic live sound.

“I’m very introverted in the writing process, the songs come from a very honest place.”

Nathan Ball's compulsion to write is fuelled by solo travel, troubadour living and an authentic desire to create a dark, atmospheric story that combines what he sees with the power of nature’s forces. Joined by his full backing band, he occupies that cinematic soundscape inspired by the intimate artistry of Daughter, Bon Iver, Foals and War on Drugs.

His debut EP Echo, released in December 2014, was an experimental, formative record that received critical praise from Line of Best Fit and Hilly Dilly. He followed this release with the second EP, Howling, which was mixed and mastered by Bruno Ellingham (Massive Attack, Amber Run, The Maccabees) and was self-released through his own Cold Water Records on April 13th.

“I wanted to move away from the singer-songwriter stuff, so Howling was a big step for us. We tucked ourselves away in a little studio in Gloucestershire over the winter and put down the EP. It was a good reflection of the direction we were looking to take the music. I think it was important to take that time away and get in the right head space, and the winter provided a nice backdrop. Working with Bruno was the obvious way to go, and he brought out elements of the song to put it in the space I felt it deserved to go.”

Nathan's Lead single Howling premiered on Clash and received critic praise from the likes of Line of Best Fit, Hunger TV and TMRW Magazine. Howling was chosen as track of the week on BBC Introducing Three Counties, featured as Shock of the New on XFM and debuted at a sold-out launch show at The Sebright Arms.
