Faithless

Faithless are a British electronica group consisting of iconic frontman Maxi Jazz, multi-instrumentalist and DJ, Sister Bliss and producer Rollo Armstrong.  Together, they formed one of the most successful electronic acts, with a career spanning 18 years that has included 7 albums (two at number 1), and numerous top 10 singles. To date, Faithless have sold in excess of 15 million records worldwide and have played live to millions across the world.

Sister Bliss’ love affair with house music began in 1987, leading her to become one of the few female house DJs in Britain at the time. With appearances at the most popular clubs worldwide, she began to make her own records and had already released a number of compositions by the time she met fellow producer, Rollo.

Rollo made his first record in 1992: Felix’s ‘Don’t U Want Me’. The record went on to sell 2½ million copies. The 1990s was the decade of dance music and Rollo was involved in some of its finest moments, starting his own label Cheeky Records.

In 1995, Rollo and Sister Bliss teamed up with Maxi Jazz to form Faithless. Their frustrations with the perceived disposability of dance music led them to create a new sonic landscape mixing dance, hip-hop, blues, folk and classical music - a dramatic bed for the thoughtful lyrics of Buddhist rapper Maxi Jazz. Rollo would never appear live, leaving Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss to front the act with various musicians across the years.

Their first eclectic album Reverence (released in 1996) was an underground sensation. The single 'Insomnia' became one of the biggest club anthems of the decade and the album climbed to Gold status in over 22 countries.

The Mercury-nominated album Sunday 8pm followed, reflecting upon themes of alienation and lost love and featured one of their favourite singers, Boy George.  It also spawned the provocative hit 'God is a DJ'.

Platinum selling album Outrospective wasnext, followed by No Roots which featured the single 'Mass Destruction' which went straight in at Number 1.

After four albums and ten years, Faithless decided to celebrate with the release of Forever Faithless - their Greatest Hits collection, reaching number 1 and selling over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone.

Faithless' fifth studio album To All New Arrivals followed in 2006, heralding the birth of Sister Bliss’ son, and featuring collaborations with Grammy award-winner Cat Power, Dido (who is Rollo’s Sister) and Robert Smith of The Cure.

In 2010, Faithless released their most recent album, The Dance. After a global tour and a summer full of acclaimed festivals, including Ultra in Miami and Glastonbury’s 40th anniversary, they broadcast their last show in April 2011 to thousands of fans in cinemas across Europe.

In 2012, Faithless were awarded the PRS Heritage Award, and a special plaque was placed on Camden’s legendary Jazz Café  - where they played their very first gig in March 1996. The award marked the contribution the band and the venue have played in music history.

The same year, they were one of the winners in Mixmag’s Greatest Dance Act Of All Time and won the prestigious DJ Awards held in Ibiza, taking away the award for Best Live Performance. They also release their live DVD/CD “Passing The Baton: Live From Brixton” which premiered on MTV HD.

2013 will see Sister Bliss launch her own label: Junkdog Records. An outlet for signing new music she believes in. A gifted musician and composer, she has written music for film, TV and theatre. Credits include 2012’s film Knife Fight starring Rob Lowe, and directed by 2-times Oscar winner, Bill Guttentag,

Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo continue to work on various projects. Sister Bliss and Rollo collaborated with Example on his number-one album Playing In The Shadows and are working on a new album project, due for release this Summer.  Rollo has also just produced and co-written his sister Dido’s new album, due for release in March 2013. Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss can be seen performing and DJ-ing at the world’s leading clubs and festivals.
