Pearl and the Puppets
Learning piano from an early age, it wasn’t until university while studying to be a teacher that Kirkintilloch’s 21-year-old Pearl first picked up a guitar and her brilliant song writing talent began to flow.
Pearl is the quietly rebellious leader of this alternative pop four-piece, which includes her backing band The Puppets. Her atmospheric, innocent and quirky songs capture the coming of age spirit while breaking through the barriers of expectation.
Pearl has already gained a number of high profile fans, namely, Elton John, who has invited her to support him at his SECC date on 10th June. Katie ‘Pearl’ Sutherland could not believe it when her band were invited to open for him and said ‘I let out such a scream my parents thought somebody had died’.
Pearl first met the music legend at her management companies Christmas party last December. She joined Twenty First Artist’s (James Blunt, Lily Allen) after posting four tracks on Myspace, which caught the eye of one of the company executives. Thus ensued a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, a recording session with legendary producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur) at Olympic Studios in London and her track ‘Because I Do’ used as the soundtrack to Vodafone’s Australian and New Zealand advert.
“Sunderland is cute as a button and stylish in an offbeat way…Feisty and fearless, she bantered cheekily with the crowd and went down a storm” Susan Swarbrick – The Herald Saturday Magazine
“Pearl has a voice to fall in love with… “ Jim Gellatly - XFM Scotland
“…the sound of Blondie if they’d listened to Folk instead of Punk…” Jonathan Geddes - The Herald Scotland
“Armed with her distinctive sound [Pearl] has got plenty to look forward to” Chris Sweeney - Scottish Sun
